The periodontium, tooth supporting tissue, consists of the gingiva and the alveolar bone encompassing the dental roots.
Gingivitis, slight inflammation of bacterial origin of the gums around the teeth or implants can be reversible. This requires regular hygiene care. Untreated gingivitis can degenerate into periodontitis, greater involvement characterised by irreversible bone loss. Without treatment the teeth can move and eventually fall out. Periodontitis is a multifactorial disease influenced amongst others by the accumulation of tartar, plaque and tobacco smoke.
Our hygienists have a vital role in preventing periodontal disease and regular monitoring is essential to maintain a healthy oral condition.
